Alex Merkin has been directing like crazy for over a decade, completing four shorts, a cable series, and seven features.  (Feature #8 is about to begin.)  Alex’s short This Modern Man Is Beat won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2016.

Let’s find out what kind of films Alex is, and isn’t, into.

Episode 41: Alex Merkin

Jeff & Alex at the 2016 Sherman Oaks Film Festival.

This Modern Man Is Beat won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2016, and I never stopped thinking about how beautifully cinematic it is.  I knew from working with the filmmakers that there would be a good story behind it, and director Alex Merkin did not disappoint.  What I didn’t know is how many fils Alex has behind him and ahead of him.  I couldn’t be happier for this talented young man.

As always… watch the film and then listen to the interview.  The link to This Modern Man Is Beat on Vimeo is right here.

And if you want to go deeper into Alex’s catalog, here is his earlier short film Across The Hall.  We discuss this one quite a bit on the podcast, too.

Episode 40: DF4Q with Jeff Simpson

Jeff Simpson is a director, writer, and actor… and he has worked at both Film Invasion Los Angeles and the Sherman Oaks Film Festival.  Besides being a great help at the festivals, Jeff is a film lover who takes the time to watch most of the festival’s films.  I invited him to come do a DF4Q.

If you want to see some of Jeff’s work, check out May God Forgive and Kingfisher.

Episode 38: Jean-Marie Marbach

Click this poster to watch “Fiebre En La Disco”

At Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2017, Fiebre en la Disco won the Grand Jury Prize for Music Video.  It might be a music video, but from the first time I saw it I knew that I was actually watching a visionary short film.  The
music video’s creator, Jean-Marie Marbach, lives in Paris and came out to Los Angeles for the festival.  He proved to be one of those wonderful filmmakers who attends all of the other films and shows nothing but enthusiasm for the art of film.

I knew even before I started this podcast that I wanted to include Jean-Marie in it.  If you want to watch Fiebre en la Disco, click the poster to your right.
